Woodgrain Illusions

Hand-rendered grain patterns inspired by rare woods, historical boiserie, and custom architectural details.

Woodgrain illusion by Babs Watkins
This panel is one of eight commissioned works created for a client who had fallen in love with a series of exquisitely carved wooden panels she discovered in Europe. Unable to acquire the originals, she approached me with a unique challenge: to capture their beauty, character, and sense of history through paint. Drawing inspiration from the original carvings, I carefully interpreted their intricate details and architectural elegance, creating painted versions that preserved the spirit of the works while becoming artistic statements in their own right. What began as a single panel soon evolved into a collection of eight, each designed to work harmoniously within the client's master bedroom and adjoining sitting room. Installed together, the panels created a rich and atmospheric environment, evoking the romance of a European interior while remaining deeply personal to the home. The project was a wonderful reminder that artistry can transcend materials, allowing the essence of a treasured object to be reimagined and brought to life in an entirely new form.

Drawing inspiration from a previous motif, I expanded the concept into a series of four custom panels. Designed to function as a decorative screen, the panels were individually crafted and then hinged together, creating a sculptural element that combines artistry, texture, and architectural presence.

These boxed beams were newly constructed and carried a strong orange tone that felt out of harmony with the home's palette. Through the application of multiple custom washes, we transformed the color and character of the wood while preserving its natural appearance. The goal was not to make the beams look painted, but rather to create the impression that they had always possessed this richer, more nuanced patina.
