For more than thirty years, Jay has shaped interiors through the quiet power of surface. His work blends sculpted plaster, mineral-based finishes, and historically inspired techniques that bring depth, atmosphere, and emotional resonance to a room. Every project is approached as a collaboration — a dialogue between architecture, light, and the subtle movement of hand‑crafted texture.
Over the decades, Jay has partnered with some of Houston’s most respected designers, including Babs Watkins, John Kidd, Lucinda Loya, Kara Childress, Janet Gust, Pam Pierce, Kathy Baker, Marilyn Phillips and Jennifer Burgess Loh. These collaborations have produced interiors defined by soft elegance, sculpted surfaces, and dramatic contrasting offsets — a visual language that has quietly influenced the region’s design identity.
His work has also been commissioned by families such as the Wise, Lay, McNair, Berkman, Wagner, Thorpe, and John Eddy Williams households, ranging from intimate single‑room treatments to multi‑year, whole‑home transformations.
Iarussi's first project in this new medium was to paint the walls of Houston architect Michael Landum’s office. “He understands how to do walls that don’t look commercial” Landum says. “His pieces are like exotic daydreams. There’s a perspective romanticism about them”
“He has an amazing color sense” says Baba Watkins, who has commissioned Iarussi to paint several areas-including this grotto vignette - in her design shop, Watkins. Schatte, & Culver in the West U district of Houston.
“Surfaces are where architecture becomes emotion — where restraint, patina, and sculpted texture create the atmosphere people remember.”
