James Halloway’s kitchen and bath project demonstrates a restrained yet deeply tactile approach to materiality — combining hand-finished plaster, softened mineral color, and natural warmth to create an interior that feels both modern and enduring. The layered finishes bring rhythm and depth to the cabinetry, walls, and architectural details without overpowering the room.
Layers of Subtle Sophistication
For this kitchen, I created a custom vent hood finished in a subtly textured
burnished plaster, giving it the presence of a handcrafted architectural
element rather than a purely functional feature. The gentle movement within
the plaster added depth and character, while the burnished surface reflected
light with a soft, elegant sheen.
To complement the hood, the walls were finished with a smooth plaster
treatment and enhanced with delicate watercolor washes. These translucent
layers introduced subtle variations in color and tone, creating a sense of
depth and atmosphere without overpowering the space.
Together, the burnished hood and softly washed walls created a harmonious
balance of texture, light, and craftsmanship. The result was a kitchen that
felt refined and inviting, where every surface contributed to an atmosphere
of quiet luxury and timeless beauty.
Layers of Plaster and Light
Another view of the walls finished with handcrafted plaster and translucent
watercolor washes, revealing the depth and dimension that become visible as
light moves across the surface. The combination of plaster and watercolor
allowed the walls to develop a softness and complexity that could not be
achieved with paint alone.
Each layer was applied to enhance the natural texture of the plaster, creating
subtle shifts in tone and movement that give the surface an organic,
atmospheric quality. The watercolor washes settled gently into the finish,
adding nuance and a sense of age without overwhelming the architecture.
The result is a wall that feels both elegant and timeless, where texture,
color, and light work together to create a surface rich in character and
quiet beauty.
The Art of Layered Surfaces
For this space, we began by applying a handcrafted plaster finish to the walls
, creating a textured foundation rich with depth and character. Once the
plaster had cured, we layered translucent watercolor washes over the surface
, allowing color to settle gently into the texture and reveal subtle variations
throughout the room.
The combination of plaster and watercolor created an atmospheric finish that
felt both refined and organic. As light moved across the walls, delicate
shifts in tone emerged, giving the surfaces a sense of movement and life
that evolved throughout the day.
The result was a finish that balanced artistry and restraint, transforming
ordinary walls into richly layered surfaces that conveyed warmth, elegance,
and a timeless sense of beauty.

Architectural Columns Reimagined
These brick columns were transformed through a layered plaster process that
completely redefined their presence within the space. We began by resurfacing
the masonry with a base plaster coat, creating a smooth and uniform foundation
while preserving the strength and scale of the original structure.
Once the surface was prepared, we applied a rich charcoal-colored burnished
plaster, carefully polishing the finish to achieve depth, luminosity, and a
subtle reflective quality. The dark tone brought a sophisticated sense of
drama, while the burnished surface revealed nuanced variations that shifted
beautifully with the changing light.
The result was a striking architectural feature that balanced strength and
elegance. What had once been ordinary brick columns became sculptural elements,
anchoring the space with a timeless finish rich in texture, craftsmanship,
and visual impact.
The Fireplace as Sculpture
TThis fireplace wall was finished in a warm charcoal plaster, chosen for its
richness, depth, and ability to anchor the room with quiet sophistication.
The earthy charcoal tones brought a sense of warmth and permanence,
transforming the fireplace into a commanding architectural focal point.
Once applied, the plaster was carefully burnished to a luminous sheen,
revealing subtle variations in color and texture within the surface. As light
moved across the wall, the finish came alive with depth and dimension,
enhancing both the scale of the fireplace and the atmosphere of the room.
The result was a surface that felt at once contemporary and timeless, where
the craftsmanship of hand-worked plaster elevated the fireplace from a
functional feature to a sculptural statement at the heart of the home.
The Fireplace as Sculpture
This architectural fireplace wall was finished in a warm charcoal plaster,
chosen for its ability to bring depth, sophistication, and a sense of
permanence to the room. The rich tone provided a striking focal point while
maintaining a warmth that complemented the surrounding interiors.
Once applied, the plaster was carefully burnished to enhance its natural
beauty, creating a soft reflective sheen that revealed subtle variations in
color and texture. As light moved across the surface, the wall took on an eve
r-changing character, highlighting the craftsmanship inherent in the finish.
The result was a fireplace feature that felt both timeless and contemporary,
transforming a functional architectural element into a sculptural centerpiece
defined by texture, light, and understated elegance.
The Beginnings of a Signature Finish
For this feature wall, I was commissioned to interpret the designer's and
client's vision of a stratified cliff face, revealing the beauty and
complexity of geological stone formations through plaster. Rather than
treating the wall as a flat surface, I approached it as a sculptural work,
building layers of plaster over several days to create depth, movement, and
the illusion of natural strata shaped by time.
Each application added another chapter to the composition, allowing the
relief to emerge gradually through a process of layering, carving, and
refinement. Once the sculptural surface was complete, I selectively burnished
+portions of the plaster, creating subtle contrasts between matte and polished
areas that enhanced the wall's dimensional quality.
The result was a dramatic architectural centerpiece that blurred the line
between sculpture and finish. Inspired by the enduring beauty of nature, the
wall evokes the rugged elegance of exposed stone cliffs, transforming a
simple surface into a work of art rich with texture, depth, and geological
character.
